CEDAG campaigns for the adoption of a European Charter for civil dialogue, aiming at structuring current relationships between civil society organisations and European institutions in terms of reciprocal trust and partnership.

A European Charter for civil dialogue can be considered as a direct benefit for Europen citizenship. In the framework of the European Comission “D plan” (Democracy, Dialogue and Debate) and the debates run at the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, a Charter for civil dialogue is an important step to bring Europe and its citizens closer together.

A European Charter would be inspired on existing national agreements for civil dialogue, and stress on the implementation of participatory democracy rather than on traditional consultations processes. Its principles should acknowledge the legitimacy of civil society to represent European citizens and non-profit associations as partner of the European Institutions.

A code of conduct for the interest representatives is not appropriate to stand for European Charter for civil dialogue.

The content of the Charter has to be debated among national and European platforms of associations, in order to claify its potentialities. CEDAG is working in this way to develop partnerships between national platforms through the project “Missing Link in the EU engagement”.

CEDAG calls for the adoption of a European Statute of Association, demonstrating the willingness of the European Union to develop the European citizenship.
